Hi, I have a 1919 S penny and it looks like the “L” in Liberty was printed on the rim of the coin. I am wondering if this is considered an error and if it’s worth anything. Thanks :) Happy New Year!

It is a normal feature of the Lincoln Wheat Penny design. It is not an error.

The L originally wasn't this close on the die, but overuse of the die in striking the coins caused distortion of the die towards the perimeter ( like if you hit a solid steel pole ~( the die) with repeated force of a hammer ( striking coins) , even steel will spread outwards from where the hammer hits 100,000+ times. They could have changed the die or limited the number of strikes ( They usually do for proofs if needed), so even up to today we see coins affected by it. It is called Die Deterioration Doubling and is damage and not true doubled die coins, No Additional value. Jim

The Die has been over used and it causes this affect. On Wheat Cents the L is too close to the rim do a worn die crested this affect. Welcome to CT.
