New member..Hi to all! I'm somewhat new to coin collecting and I just need some input on this penny. I believe it's mechanical doubling. The areas in question are chin/mouth on obverse and areas marked on reverse. Thanks.
I was thinking it was dipped in acid. The Reverse shows some evidence of material displacement. I'll have to look up electric wire wheel (unfamiliar term). I'm assuming a grinding/buffing wheel with a wire bristle attachment.
I have heard about the damage caused by different cleaning methods but this is the first one I've had in my hand. I have just retired and find coin collecting enjoyable. I've know I have a lot to learn still so I'm sure I will have more questions in the future. Thanks again!
Welcome to the hobby @In4red ! We all are still in the learning mode. I was unfortunately correct with my guess at the electric wire wheel; yikes!! That's a fast way to ruin a coin!! I'm thinking acid based on a razor sharp cent I found as a kid. Still could make out Lincoln, but the rest had that wavy appearance. Or drifting sand in a desert?
An easy way to help with coins is to learn to determine damage from minting errors. You can always learn how the damage occurred later, as well as the numerous types of damage. The same goes for Mint errors. So many types, done are worth big money but most are worthless. Learn the coin minting process and your understanding will benefit in the future. Welcome to CT.
