I thought I was done buying ancients for this year but @Bob L. kindly directed me to a Parthian that was priced reasonably well for the type. And thanks to some x-mas money, I was able to acquire it immediately. I was happier when it arrived & saw it came with a Harlen J Berk tag. Thanks again, @Bob L. Vardanes I (40 - 45 A.D.) AR Tetradrachm O: Bust with short pointed beard facing left, ear coverd by hair, wart on brow. R: King enthroned right receiving palm frond from Tyche holding a cornucopia.ENT 43-44 AD 13.91g 27mm Seleucia Mint Sellwood 64.20-27 Ex. Harlen J Berk
A really nice coin. It looks like there is graffiti on the obverse that may spell out a word? It would be interesting to decipher it if this is the case. John
I got mine in 1999 and still do not understand the coin to the level I would like. Sellwood 64.16 confused me and Sunrise did nothing to help. Mine seems to be dated ΔΚΤ but the Kappa must be a misreading for N making my coin one year before Mat's. It also is odd in missing the Φ in ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ at the inner left. Because it is off center to the top, I have the outer line at the bottom which I read as ΠΑΝHΠΟΥ (June?) but Sellwood says ΠΑΝHMΟΥ even though his drawing for 64.7 also reads ΠΑΝHΠΟΥ. Perhaps we should learn not to take Parthian spelling too seriously? Parthian coins are either fun or frustrating depending on the mood I am in on any given day. Any light of the subject would be appreciated.
doesn’t look like it in hand but it does look like M and a W. nice coin, Doug. Burke’s tag says the month is off flan.
