Thoss are actually made from metal flowing from the fields to the devices and rim. When a planchet is struck, the extra metal is forced into the raised part of the die (which creates the design/devices on the coin). When this happens enough times, the die itself starts to wear and exhibit the pattern of the metal lines flowing.
