I think that the 5 Sovereign coin at just a shade under 40 grams (39.90 to be precise) was probably the heaviest gold coin in circulation. The largest gold coin that I've ever purchased, and still own, is the 1990 Isle of Man commemorative coin issued on the 150th Anniversary of the first postage stamp, the black 1p stamp issued under the reign of Queen Victoria. The 5 crown weighs a hefty 5 ounces of fine gold.

Struck in high relief at the Pobjoy mint, they managed to capture the essence of the stamp beautifully, I think. Scheduled mintage was 199 pieces but the common belief is that only about 120 or less were actually minted.

Please post anything in your collection which you regard as your largest/heaviest gold or silver coin/medal.

The Hall Mint produced some of the most beautifull coinage, ever struck.

Thank you! You will get a chuckle, I brought that piece in for our local coin club show and tell, one member asked why they a denomination like that named after a vegetable?
I explained "Zecchini" are form of Italian coinage based on the Dukat system/ Zucchini is a vegetable;) Still did not get it.....

I think this 10 pound coin weighing 5 ounces is the biggest silver coin in my collection. It is visually huge as well

No, the Franklin Mint sold these 20 Balboas separate in presentation box for proof edition. Luckily/ the FM encapsulated their coins, so the Silver is perfect no toning. The FM proofsets alsohad presentation boxes, but coin came in a protective plastic tray, hence no toning. This was how I got started into my coin adventures.

John, out of curiosity, I pulled mine out. Looks like one is still sealed in the original plastic, so I can't confirm the year, but I'm pretty sure it's also 1975. Looks like the 20 Balboa is 61mm and almost 130g, which makes it my biggest silver coin. Very hard to photograph, but I didn't want to pull them from the display box.

It looks like they made 21,000 of the 20 Balboas each year as individual proof sets and the other 41,000 went into sets. They're quite lovely and its interesting that none of them show any toning at all, even after almost 45 years. I would be interested to know what the plastic is made of.
