A friend found a 1985 d penny the thing is it looks chrome to me. The pictures I took came out crappy because of what I'm guessing are smudges and I'm not going to try to wipe them off because I don't want to be responsible for scratching it up. It looks like shiny new chrome when I look at it didn't see the smudges till I took the pics. Here are the best 2. Hope someone can tell me what this actually is.

Yes, it appears to be a chrome plated cent. Fun find, but no real value. Folks used to pass off nickel/chrome/mercury coated cents as dimes. Not much point in that these days, but 70 years ago, there was some purpose. The 1883 V Nickel underwent a RDV change (reverse design) to add 'CENTS' because folks were gold plating nickels to pass off as a V (5) dollar coins instead.

Until it became general knowledge that mercury could be harmful to your health, science classes in the 60's used to dip pennies in mercury all the time. ~ Chris

The Mercury makes the copper look silver.

I hate when people do these backyard experiments and then put them out into circulation. Do a search on Ebay of all the wonderful shiny heavy metals one can obtain....then go to youtube....now you have a recipe for something you do not want to be handling/touching at all.
