19--D Lincoln

This came from the cast off bin of Lincolns I have been searching again and again.
I am posting it mainly because I cannot quite figure out how it got into this condition and still maintain some integrity as a wheat cent.
Stats are: 19mm width, 1mm thick and 2.1 grams in weight.
I am posting pictures of the obverse, reverse, a view of the coin set on top another wheat cent, and a view from the edge with it setting on top of a 57 wheat cent.
All I can say is copper wheat cents want to stay around as long as they are physically able.

Whoa. That's one screwed up coin.

 

The pictures you took are very clear. What kind of camera do you use? I have tried every type of camera up to 18*zoom using 10 megapixels and still cannot get a good up close camera. Look at all the camera shots I've posted and you'll see what I'm running into. :headbang:

I found another that looks as if it was used to sand concrete sidewalks.
The only reason I know it is a Lincoln is I can see a faint outline of the
figure on one side. I also found several that have holes drilled through them
and one looks as if someone shot it it through and through with a very small caliber weapon.
Another has someones initials which were obviously drilled into the metal.
And, some have scratched initials.
But to this special Lincoln I will give it a home so it can remind me of what not to do with coins.
Go figure...

This looks lke it was in a fire and a prime candidate for the heat treatment to remove the carbon coating.

Heat Treatment = stick it in the oven and get it extremely hot then submerge it in ice water to crack off the carbon coating to reveal the date underneath.

Considering its current condition, what harm would occur in giving it a try?

I am not going to heat up my kitchen with a 500 degree oven for any cruddy old cent.
Besides, I think this poor Lincoln deserves to be retired. It seems to have lost a lot of weight along the way.
