Hello All! I am would appreciate some insight from folks far wiser than I about the 1944 D coin I have come across. I've recently inherited my grandfather's and father-in-law's coin collections and working my way through evaluating them all! I think this would be considered a D/D, but I'm having trouble finding info for D/D instead of D/S.
Welcome to the neighborhood! A D/D is called a Re-punched Mintmark (RPM). A D/S is called an Over Mintmark (OMM). Did you search the Wexler site, Variety Vista, Lincoln Cent Resource and Copper Coins? Sometimes they omit the cross-references. ~ Chris
Nice find, and a cherrypicker coin to boot . http://varietyvista.com/02a LC RPMs Vol 1/1944DRPM002.htm
cpm9ball & Rick Stachowski - I had not checked! I knew about the Lincoln Cent Resource, but did not think to check it since it was not listed in the Red Book. I appreciate the help and will use these resources to cross reference in the future! So far, I have found several coins that appear to have an error, rare variety, key date, or are at least interesting/different. I'm going through each one again to recheck them and decide if there are any truly worth having graded to sell. Thanks for your help!
Nice find! Very clear RPM and your photos are very good as well! It looks like your relatives had a keen eye as well!
Before you consider submitting any for grading with the hope of profiting from their sale, I'd do a little more studying, particularly on auction sites because I think you'll find that most will not sell for what it will cost you. ~ Chris
Thanks for the welcome everyone! Bambam - My father-in-law definitely has an eye and collected several different things, but I did not know that my grandfather was an avid collector at one point. His whole collection was broken up and split between the 6 kids when he'd passed away! I can't imagine what else he had in his collection on top of the Barber coins, Mercury dimes, Walking Liberty coins, etc. that I have. cpm9ball - My thoughts exactly!
Just a big New Years THANKS to Mr. Stachowski for the RPM link. I have an unc. 1938-SSS that would probably grade MS-63/64 Red & a 1946-D MS-63 RB, that I have wondered about both rarity & relative values. J.T.
