So as I am a bit new, I am wondering what was done to this coin? There were a bunch of these selling recently. It looked to me like some were circulated. And im guessing this was done later. Im assuming some sort of cleaning or polishing? But some still brought decent money. Is it just a, beauty is in the eye of the beholder type of thing?
That's what I figured. There were several on auctions. The seller said they came to us this way. Which is probably true as they were selling other nice morgans. I didn't dare buy any. The reverse
Yeah, and they bought this from a little old granny who kept it in her sock drawer for seventy-five years. ~ Chris
Good instinct. That poor coin has been through unspeakable horrors. Absolutely avoid any that look like this!
When they are really shiny and clean looking and yet have no luster, that's a big red flag. That natural shine (luster) that a newly minted coin has cannot be faked.
Whizzing covers a lot of things. They usually try to simulate luster when it is whizzed with a wire brush on a Dremel. This has been polished with rouge to give a simulated proof mirrored surface. The same thing without mechanical damage can be donw with Mercury and makes what was called a "California Proof".
Probably not. Whizzing specifically refers to using a rotating brush head at high speeds to simulate luster (named for the "whizzzzz" sound the brush head makes). This appears to be polished, maybe with a jewelers rouge, maybe with baking soda and a toothbrush, or some sort of silverware polish.
It's crazy, this guy is selling a bunch. Some Carson city ones even and they're going for a lot. I couldn't understand any of it. I only noticed some because they were starting at a penny. I dropped I think 7 on those. I wasn't even going full melt lol. And then they went for stupid money. Some for more than an average one. I honestly didn't even want to win them for the 7. The seller is morgandealer. I have bought a couple other morgans from him that were beautiful.
