Hi All, First time poster here. I a LOT of rolled pennies., I have no idea why I started hoarding them years ago. I think somewhere along the line, maybe 60's? that I heard they were going to discontinue them. Now I'm wondering, do I keep them? Any reason to look through them & sort them by years? Anything special I should be looking for? I'd hate to be one of those fools who cashes a valuable one into the bank. Thanks so much for any advice. Bev

Welcome to the forum Bev !!

For starters you will want to seperate the wheat cents from the memorials.

You will need to buy a 2009 Redbook as well ( Ebay, Amazon, B&N etc ), then when taking a break from sorting, read up a little on the Lincolns in the book and ask questions and for more pointers here.

After sorting wheats from memorials, do I need to sort by dates? Thanks so much for your speedy response! Bev

If the quantity you have is not overwhelming, sure, sort by date. If you have ALOT, maybe some coin tubes will help.

There are so many different varietys, errors, mintmarks that a general idea is tough to give. The Redbook will help you with that also.

There are a cpl helpful websites, I will link to two of them here:

    Hope these help !

If you want to look for better dates and/or varieties, it would be helpful to sort by date and mintmark.

The Redbook mentioned above and a good magnifying glass will be very beneficial.

And be sure to post questions, finds, etc on here. There are plenty of Lincoln Cent enthusiasts running around here who can help you.

A Lincoln Cent reference book would be helpful, there are a couple different ones.

Also, any pre 1982 cents are composed of copper, and are worth about 2.5 cents right now due to the price of copper.

There are several varieties to look for, but you'll need to devote alot of time and effort.

And most importantly, if you think you've found a scarce coin, don't clean it in any way, even if it's dirty.

Roll tubes help alot. Mark dates on them and as U look at them put in respective tube. It helps to put them in a small box, so the cat, dog, kids, wind etc. don't knock them over and U have to start all over. Also, others have been saving pre 82 cents just incase the gov. allows melting of them for the copper as per earlyrarecoins post.
