I been wanting to ask about this piece. Until I joined CT, I had never heard of a military challenge coin and I gave the Army almost eight years. The piece below showed up in one of my "back of the closet" boxes. I have absolutely zero recollection of the thing, but I served my years in the Army as a missile crewman on these Pershing missiles. I seriously have no recollection whatsoever of acquiring this thing. Is this a military challenge coin?

Can I ask what years you gave your eight years to the Army?

To answer your question; yes, I believe it is a military challenge coin. It's a nice one as well!

I'm surprised you don't recall or remember where/how you acquired it. These coins are/were usually (put not necessarily) presented at award ceremony's.

I was decorated several times and have the awards in my office. I enjoyed my service time. Just was one of those things that fit me well I suppose.... However as a very young man my priorities were on guitars, girls and beer. The times I was decorated are dim or non-existent in my mind. But boy howdy how I remember the girls!

Had this one for year. Don't remember where I got this from. I wasn't in the AF. Anyone know what the 1947 represents? Never bothered looking it up. Maybe it was the year they went from the Army Air Corps to Air Force??

1947 was the year the Air Force became an independent branch. Those coins were given to Trainees once they became Airmen in Basic Training. I have one. As far as I know the Air Force still presents a coin but it's a different design.

I got this from my AFROTC detachment at UCLA.

Freshman year we were promised a coin, t shirt, and discounted dining out tickets if we “donated” $100 to the det. Never got the shirt or the coin and I think got maybe $10 off each ticket.

I was stonewalled and never got my coin despite repeated requests and attempts.

3.5 years later, I was out of rotc and a good friend of mine managed to “pull some strings” and get me the coin I paid for so many years ago.

It's not a Challenge Coin but you get the point... I'll see your key ring @dwhiz and call you one. ;)
