Since there is no raised edge on the OPs coin, I doubt it was spooned. Also, since the edge appears uniformly smooth I don't think it was from a coin machine or a slot machine. Looks more like it may have been machined smooth. Just my opinion.
Typical circulation wouldn't scrape all the reeding off a quarter. Whoever last owned it must have intentionally messed with the coin.
There are so many ways a coin can be damaged, once it's been established that it's PMD, there's no reason to debate the cause IMO. Maybe this coin was spooned, maybe it was a slot machine coin, maybe a laundry/vending machine coin, maybe it's been machined. Regardless, does it really matter the source of the PMD? IMO, save the debate for discussing mint made errors. Just sayin'
Unless someone is collecting smooth edges coins then it really dont matter how it got smooth. In my opinion.. but then again, I'm just learning so who knows.
I don't believe the OPs coin was spooned. If I was analyzing this coin for any type of error, I would weigh it, determine the diameter with an electronic micrometer, look for striations from the punch press which would go in one direction when the planchets are made, and look for any machining and tooling. I have a friend who makes rings and like Jersey Magic Man said It doesn't have the characteristics of being a spooned coin. I am leaning for it being finely machined which is why I would like to see the diameter. We older collectors have seen some fine tooling and engraving on old love tokens and jewelry. Keep collecting coins and have a Happy New Year.
