Can anyone tell me what caused this?

I know a little about error coins and don't know if this was post Mint or not.

Looks like heat damage to me.

 

It's damaged. Does it matter how?

 

Looks like a struck-through late stage die cap to me.
Better, clearer, properly oriented pictures would definitely help.

Wouldn't that much heat affect the reverse as well?

 

Thanks. I took these photos with my phone but will try to get a better shot with a friend's camera.

 

Really don't know, maybe better pictures will help.

You can get decent pictures with a phone. All my photos are from my phone. Just put the coin on a level surface and put your phone on something 3-4in above to help keep it steady.
