The coin is a 63. I posted it because I don’t understand Gold coinage grading. I have Morgan and Peace dollars that grade 63-64 and don’t look as good as the Indian. Are there different standards for gold coins? Also a 63-64 in Grey Sheet is more than double in price, why?

These are tough because of the incuse, not because of the gold. Look at the detail in the shoulder of the eagle’s wing and on the band on the headdress. Also, you can see from the pic even that the luster is nice.

Your confusing the grading issue with coins that are totally different. The Gokd Indians have an included design where the Morgan and Peace Dollars do not.

I understand two different types of coins but I have Libs and a Staint Gaudens in 63’s that appear to be nicer coins then the MS64 dollars. Just wondering if gold has different grading standards?

A lot of people actually consider Saints to be consistently overgraded. I don’t know Morgans or Libs that well though so I can’t speak to comparisons.

I can't say about the grading of silver to gold. It is what it is and we are not going to change that from the graders.

This pretty much sums it up.

    1) Gold is certainly graded differently than silver
    2) Indian $2.5 and $5 gold coins have an incuse design, so they’re kind of special
    3) Saints appear to be overgraded because they are large coins and hits/marks are more obvious than on smaller coinage
