Hello I am new around here but wanted to see if there are any experts in the house:). I have a collection of bright red proof or proof like indian head pennies. Here is a pic of one please tell me what you guys think. Coin looks a lil dark but its bright red and very reflective. Thanks for your comments in advance.

Howdy mstng02gt - Welcome to the Forum !!

I gotta say it's not a Proof. I'm wondering if it's a genuine coin even. Can you post a pic of the other side ?

    Welcome mst.

Your coin may be genuine but it appears to be polished. It most certainly is not Proof.

I actually cant at the moment. But the weight is right on target, thickness is accurate etc. I would be incredibly surprised if there were not genuine. It is very glossy too. Good feedback though. I guess its possible it could be wizzed but I do not have the knowledge to know the difference. How do you tell the difference between the older proofs and the business strikes?

You guys have been great I appreiate all your opinions. I do not have much in this coin I paid about $20 for it. It has all four diamonds and is still full of detail. I do know what a proof indian looks like, but only from a picture. This coin still has more of a matte finish. It is just that the picture does not show the luster very well. I know older proofs do not have mirrors of new coins. Maybe one day ill invest the $20 to send it to anacs. I would still be happy if I had $40 in this coin. Thanks again guys!

Welcome again and good luck! Something else you can do is compare your coin to proof at indiancent.com(Rick Snows web site) and at heritage. Don't be shy about posting pictures of IHC's. There are several fans around here.

Coins from that period should have very strong mirrors and this coin simply doesn't appear to from the photos. Also copper is nearly unknown in PL so that is easy to rule out.

the shine is just wrong for a proof, it looks polished to me.
