Just cut open a mint-sewn uncirculated state quarter bag [mixed 1999-2000] and the reverse of a Virginia example caught my eye. There is clear doubling on at least two of the ships towards the center of the coin that is visible without a loupe. I am usually quick to dismiss coins/posts/finds like this as simple machine doubling, but I can't seem to shake this one off. I was unable to find anything similar on Google, eBay, PCGS, etc. What do you think? Do I have something here or is this a spender? Here's a normal Virginia quarter for comparison's sake, taken with the same camera. PCGS also has high-resolution photos of a few mint state coins. I checked Wexler's which had only one obverse variety for Virginia, as well as Variety Vista which has nothing listed under VA.
Looks neat. but it could be MD. Your pictures are a bit blurry where it counts, and the pics would work out better zoomed in just a bit more.
Haha, more like I found it with a loupe first, then realized I could see it without one. My eyesight was 20/10 last time it was checked.
I think it should be considered machine doubling, but I have given up on guessing what the variety forums and mostly paid experts will call it. At best it should be a class IX ( Only God Knows) single squeeze.IMO, Jim
