I picked up a worn-to-death 1877 penny from a junk bin the other day. While attributing it, I came across the delineation in the catalog between the large and small date varieties (the small date is insanely high priced). Of course, the odds are miniscule that the one I found is anything other than the common "large" type. 15773983137498449561711307261588.jpg

What are the markers for determining the date size?

Width of date...i.e. the span of the numerals. Yours is the large date, sadly.

Here's a link to the small date, which is immediately apparent.
