    Hi!

Here are two classic old quarters from the Capped Bust series. 1821 which is of the wider diameter type and 1831, a more common date of the narrower diameter type.

I have only the photos but think they are both authentic, in fairly good collectible quality.

    Perhaps VF20 to 25 for 1821 and VF25-30 for 1831?

    What do you think?

    Thanks for any comments!

Both are F15 or VF20. The 1831 is the large letters reverse, slightly more rare.

Nice looking, I'd love to have that 1821, even with the old scratches on the wing.

Overdate on the 1831 if you didn't notice it. It's an 1/1831/1.

Both nice for the age, style and wear.

I had the 1821 at VF-20 and the 1831 at VF-25, but both are just barely there.

They both look low VF range to me. I like the color on both. Based on photos it appears they would straight grade.

Nice pair. The surfaces and the color look great to me. I like this image the most.

I’ll say F15 for the 1821 and VF20 for the 1831. Both look nice and original. As others have mentioned, the 1821 has a scratch in the eagle’s left wing, but I don’t think it would block it from getting a straight numerical grade.

If you care about die marriages, the 1821 is B-2 and the 1831 is B-5. Neither die marriage is particularly scarce, but it’s still nice to know them.

I think PGCS/NGC would grade the 1821 at VF-20, and the 1831 at VF-30. The 1831 is noticeably better- notice the detail in the eagle's talons on the reverse.

I presently use PCGS Photograde app as a general guide in grading. I’m at VF 20 on the 1821 and VF 25 to 30 on the 1831. It should be noted that before using the guide, my grades would be slightly lower.
