My first "real error penny?"

  1. I just found this 1960 D penny ...can you tell me if it wthis penny will be my real first "error penny" or is it post damage?.. Again Im new...please don't be to to harsh..also if it is not am error penny what cause the damage if you can include

    Well, sorry to say it is just damage. Hard to guess what may have caused the damage, could have been something like wire cutters or a chisel along the edge. They're out there, keep looking!

    If you have time, look over Wexler, VarietyVista, Copper Coins or CudsOnCoins for a coin you find; they will give examples of errors.

    Don't give up. For literally sixty years I only looked at dates and mint marks (and condition, of course). It really wasn't until I joined CT four years ago that I started to learn about cuds, die breaks, woodies, MD etc. I actually have found a few legitimate errors since then, including in a group of Lincoln cents I've had since my teen years in the 1960s.

    As to what caused the damage? Maybe a nipper of some kind. We'll never know.
