Hi All; First post. I am trying to find out a little about a couple of hawaiian coins I have. They are the 1883 dollar and 1/4 dollar, with Kalakaua pictured on them. I have done a lot of research on the web on these coins and I am stumped as to what I might have. The ones I have are gold in color. A small portion of gold flake has pulled off of one of the coins. I was beginning to think that they might be reproductions, but there is nothing on them identifying them as such (I have a souvenir of the 1847 1 cent which states that it is a souvenir, and looks new). The coins look like they have been battered around for many years. Definately circulated. Can anyone shed some light on this? I will try and get a picture if required. Thanks
Howdy rolandtgs - Welcome to the Forum !! As they say - a picture is worth a thousand words - so please post some Based on your description though it sounds like you may have some plated or reproduction coins.
Welcome aboard roland. I agree. Genuine gold coins don't have flaking problems. Remember, the U.S. Hobby Protection Act is only a little over 30 years old, and before that it was legal to make copies of non-U.S. coins without marking them as such, so long as it wasn't done with intent to defraud. Proving fraudulent intent is not the easiest thing a lawyer is ever called upon to do. And, of course, even today many fakes are produced, both within and without the U.S., which don't honor the HPA.
The quarter and the dollar are silver so yours must be plated. Unfortuanately, redbook doesnt give a weight. I could weigh my quarter for you but no guarantees on how long it will take me to do this hehheh. Too bad about the dollar as it's worth a pretty penny.
Thanks for all of the feedback. I tried to take a picture this morning, but they didn't turn out too well. Maybe I will try again tonight. From your info, it sounds like they aren't going to be worth much anyway.

AHHAHAH - nice! I found them in a bag of coins I received from my grandfather about 25 years ago. Maybe I will dig through them again to see if there is anything else.
The $1/4 is the only coin from Hawaii that really turns ups from time to time.I have seen 1 example of the Hawaiian $1,plus 2 examples of the Hawaiian Dime.I have never seen either the 1847 Hawaiian 1 Cent or the $1/2,however. Aidan.
