Why PCGS is better than NGC

I think trying not to scratch a slab is harder than trying not to scratch the coin.

I demand slabs, in slabs!

 

Not to put words in his mouth, but the current NGC slab surfaces are more irregular than those of the PCGS slabs. This is especially noticeable when I put one under a microscope. The older NGC slab surfaces were downright lousy until you go back to the fatties.

 

I don't actually like the new generation PCGS slabs. They are too thick and don't fit nicely in NGC boxes anymore. I could care less about the water resistance. I don't play with my coins in the bath. I'd rather have more aesthetically pleasing slabs.

PCGS could have made new boxes that fit both their own and NGC slabs, but did not. A missed opportunity for customer goodwill and advertising.

I was on the fence about the thicker ones at first, but I actually like the size better now and don't like the previous couple generations anymore. I really don't like the rattlers, but I'm also not crazy enough to go cracking those out for no reason.

I usually don't go swimming with my coins either, but I have knocked over a water bottle on my desk that didn't have the top screwed on enough. Needless to say I was very thankful for the water resistance then.

Speaking of boxes, I really do not understand why NGC doesn't return submissions in those. The plastic boxes can't be that expensive bulk manufactured and the amount of advertising and marketing PCGS gets out of their boxes being all over seems like it would certainly be worth the cost.

 

I generally don't look at my coins in the shower but scratch-resistance is nice. I wonder why NGC isn't using equal material....

 

The fact that new PCGS slabs don’t fit into NGC boxes irritates the hell out of me. I have to separate my inventory because of it.

 

Penny smart dollar stupid in my opinion. Express level and higher get the scratch resistant slab which is nicer, but the others its $5 per coin for it which is pretty high especially for moderns.

If i was them I would find a way to get a scratch resistant slab to be my default one.

They do, and I do that when it only 1 or 2 coins in the box.

 

So. It is still inferior.

 

The opportunity lies in making either extra tall lids that fit PCGS boxes or a spacer "collar" that snapped between the top and bottom. About 1/4" would be plenty. The problem is making it profitable enough to be worth the effort.

 

It’s not, NGC is no1. NGC has reached 45 million coins graded. In addition they have the most TPG material on eBay.

 

Interesting post; not sure that I read anything that would sway me one way or the other- love subjective "analysis" post like this.

I surely look at things from a different slant from many but the strength of the guarantee and Customer service and follow-up are keys for me.

I own examples of deceptive counterfeits in genuine slabs from all of the top 4 TPG's with one having more but that may be an unfair determination for who is #1...

 

I couldn’t agree more, Jack. Most comments in this thread are subjective and simply represent personal preference or bias. It appears some posters have an agenda, they’re not just here to talk about coins.

 

So would fake trade dollars be better than real ones if more of them were on eBay than real ones? The most material on eBay isn't a real reason.

 

...and next week we will decide if Coke or Pepsi is better.

An example of what? I can't tell from those pictures if you're inferring the coin is 65BN or 58, and either way, you provide an anecdotal example of what I can only assume you perceive as a grading problem. Post a link to the Heritage auction.
