Not a mint error.. Environmental toning. (Suggestion) Keep your mint error questions over at the Error Coins forum.. Find out if you have a true error or not. Worry about value last.
@Kyle H. would you care to share what YOU think the "error" is? All I see is a beat up old quarter, which is still probably worth 25 cents.
@Kyle H. If you are going to be hunting for possibly valuable modern quarters you will have to learn to accurately grade MS60 and above, know the characteristics of the years (like the 1983 above) and recognize where damage and miniscule wear either bumps it out of a straight grade or puts it to AU or slider territory. Also, know that for this year, you need to basically get a MS64 or MS65 to have value worth holding onto. Maybe MS63 is OK to say it could be worth a buck or two, but most won't want to have that yet. Maybe in 50 years.
And on this one, I dislike the circular type gouges at the top of Washington's head. Those say to me damage. Also in fields poss light rolling machine damage.
@Kyle H. Now that you've been here awhile and know your way around, you may want to consider asking questions like: "I see xxx on the yyy. Could this be zzz?" Or "I think the xxx on the obverse may be damage, can you confirm?" That way, members can quickly focus on the areas where you are unsure, and can provide tips. Oh, and don't have a thin skin. Some answers are short because the responder didn't feel like taking the time to type a detailed answer, and occasionally people are just snarky. But overall, you'll get the correct explanation
I think you are right. I have been getting overly excited and jump the gun. Or leave my pics without explanation of reason of posting it. I am thankful.
