    Thank you for showing your example, @savitale. It finally revealed to me what it is about my example that has left me a bit puzzled since I first got it earlier this year. I will discuss it when I show my piece, but your example makes it as plain as day.

    I recently heard that Teddy Roosevelt kept one of these in his pocket. It inspired him to push for new more artistic designs on our coinage.

    Hard to know for sure without the measurements but I'm guessing a little of both. The reverse is complete as well suggesting a wide flan. From the number of flan cracks it looks like the coiner was really getting his aggression out that day so an unusually strong strike (or slightly hotter/weaker metal?) might have helped with that. It does look like the "compact portrait" type too.
