http://cgi.ebay.com/NICE-1885-S-SEA...ryZ11958QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This coin will go for thousands of dollars, but it is not a genuine 1885-S. The mintmark is completely wrong, and there is no question that it is a counterfeit. I don't mean to clog up these forums with ebay counterfeit threads, but this is a sneaky coin that only the experts will catch. Someone could be ripped off for thousands of dollars in a heartbeat. This is the photo in the auction, the wrong mintmark: And this is a genuine 1885-S, with a genuine mintmark: It is very important for everyone to know what to look for when they are buying key date, expensive coins. Luckily, this counterfeit was crudely done, and anyone who knows the series can spot this in a minute. But your average collector might not pick up on it, and they would stand to lose thousands of dollars.
You could be right, but according to Coin World ( http://www.coinworld.com/news/070306/BW_0703.asp ) there are several sizes of San Fransisco mint marks known so, if your judgement of this coin are based solely on the mint mark, maybe additional information or reference is needed. from the referenced Coin World site:
Wow, it even looks off axis in the photo. So what would happen if some one actually bought this? Would the receive a fake? Different coin? Nothing?
There are several sizes of S mintmark known, but not for that year. All of the 1885 S dimes came from the same die pair if I'm not mistaken.
More information is not needed. Only 1 reverse die was used to strike 1885-S dimes, and only 1 sized mintmark. This is an absolute counterfeit, no questions asked.
His feedback rating is also hidden. The mint mark looks way off axis also. Maybe we need to report to ebay.
Someone would actually knowingly sell a fake coin on ebay? Please say it ain't so! Of course this is why I rarely bid and wouldn't consider bidding on a coin like this UNLESS it were in a reputable slab. Gotta love the seller ID as well you know?
This was also on the CU forums. I am just very glad that people are educating others so they don't get burned. What a shame.... So olathe has the biggest bay crook around you say jack? I am not too far from Olathe. Tom
This is now over $700 with just under an hour to go. I am sure someone will contact the winner and tell them it's a fake. Or someone that knows it's a fake will purposely win the auction so someone doesn't get ripped off.
Yes. There is a group of phantom bidders who will do this for the buyer. When a phantom account gets NARUD for breaking the rules, it is no biggie, open another one.
eBay I would email the buyer but I only have one eBay account and I don't want to screw that up. A friend tried, but because she only has a zero feedback account, it would not let her contact the member.
I did contact the buyer. I simply told him to take the coin's picture to a reputable dealer for an opinion before he pays.
