Is there an Ancient Coin collector (specifically) who also collects (New Orleans) Mardi Gras 'Doubloons', (tokens), who may be able to tell me more about this one? This 'Doubloon' celebrates the 'Knights of Momus' and to justify this thread, here, I have included a 'Knightly' coin. Italy - Roger I count of Calabria and Sicily (1072-1101) Trifollaro (triple follaro) Mileto mint Obv: Knight on horseback heading left; ROQERVS COME +S Rev: Seated Virgin and child; +MARIA MATER DNI
I from New Orleans and go to Carnival/Mardi Gras every year. Momus stopped parading in the 1990's, and I don't know if they still issue doubloons. The issue of Momus, Comus, and others stopped parading (They are still an active carnival association with meetings, annual carnival balls, etc., when the city of New Orleans passed a law that all Mardi Gras Krewes and organizations must be integrated if they wanted to continue to parade. Several old-line Krewes were all-white since the beginning of Mardi Gras in the 1700's and refused memberships to persons' of color, even in the early 1990's. Several, like Comus and Momus, chose to cease parading rather than admit persons of color into their organizations. When they paraded in the past of course, they throw doubloons to the crowds. My wife and I collect some doubloons, as we catch a fair number during the parades.
@Gregory Johnston Thanks for your reply. (Interesting.) If you would like me to send this one to you, can you please P.M. me an address?
Interesting post @Topcat7 . I can’t say that I collect them but I do have a few Mardi Gras tokens. I’ll snap some images of them if I can find them. I imagine that a lot of us ancient coin collectors have other unusual numismatic and related interests. I have a collection of World War I medals (mostly French).
@Deacon Ray Thank you for your reply. Coincidentally. I came across my Uncle Fred's British WWI and WWII medals in my father's belongings (passed recently in his 99th year) and I was about to hand them on to another member of the family. Before I do, here are his WWI medals and the "Princess Mary Christmas Tin" that was handed out to all of the British soldiers at Christmas, 1914, and his WWII medals and 'dog tag'. (I have also included some of my father's WWII medals.) and in WWII . . . . Some of my father's . . . I hope that seeing these are of interest to you. "Lest We Forget" In order to conform to 'Ancient' theme - Unknown 'Celtic' coin - English?
Your family medals are fascinating, @Topcat7 ! I’ve posted some of my French medals at: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/th...-other-numismatic-related-collections.352181/
