I just bought this concept dollar on ebay graded MS68 by ICG. It is more beautiful in person than these pics. You look at this and just shake your head why the mint would prefer SAC and all of the Presidents on dollar coins instead of this design: http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/2000ml.html
VERY cool Ed. If you look at the "concepts" that are turned in, the officials almost always seems to pick the worst one. And when they do pick a decent one, they usually end up redesigning it enough to make it ugly!
Our Government stopped minting beautiful coins after the Standing Liberty Qtrs, W.L. Halves etc and went political. Some of the Commemoratives are nice but everyone can't enjoy them with limited production. We should have new coin subjects every 1/4 century. Get coin collecting back to a hobby!! That is a beautiful specimen you received!!
Bobcat,if the American currency legislation was changed, the A-Team or the Dukes of Hazard should be commemorated on a coin.
No doubt about it, it's a beautiful coin. But (always a "but" and nobody loves a critic), the field on the obverse is too plain; perhaps a few stars would complement Liberty's face. Also, with the large amount of unadorned field, it would accumulate obvious bag marks very quickly making high-end grades very uncommon. However, this could be a plus from some collectors' viewpoints.
Aidan, I would prefer to see the General Lee on a coin rather then a van. However, I am open to debate the topic as long as one includes chitty chit bang bang. After all that car could fly and I mean really fly. Seriously, I hope I don't start an international incident but as far as modern coins go I really like the what the french had done overall from the 1800's on.
Nice coin....I like it but I think the Gov might have thought it looked like a old coin and not a new one...I wish they would ask us!! Speedy
Andy, the A-Team coin could have the members of the A-Team (including Mr T. & Hulk Hogan) getting out of the van & into action. As to the Dukes of Hazard coin,it could have the General Lee car (which I saw at the Wanganui A & P Show around 20 years ago) speeding up a ramp.
Thank you for that.I haven't seen the Dukes of Hazzard for many years. It is a classic like the cop show Chips.
This concept dollar was the creation of Ron Landis at the Gallery Mint. He carved the dies and main devices for the piece and struck several dozen to pass around congress so they could see what a gold colored coin could look like. The originals were struck on regular thickness planchets and were dated 1995. These pieces are highly sought after by collectors and rarely appear for sale. Soon after these were made, there was a movement to put the Statue of Liberty on the new gold dollar, so Ron Landis created a SOL obverse and paired it with the same reverse. When collectors deluged the GMM wanting copies of these concept dollars, they made a new obverse die dated 2000 and struck 2500 of each kind, Liberty Head and SOL, on extra thick piedfort planchets. They were offered at $25 each and sold out in a few weeks. Both these designs were offered as possible designs for the new gold dollar, but in the end, it was decided that Sacajawea should grace the obverse so his obverse designs were not considered. However, the reverse design was one of the quarter finalists in the running for the new gold dollar. Didn't make it, but these coins are now considered by most numismatists as private mint pattern issues and they sell quickly when offered. Also, the picture used in this thread was a picture I took of my piece a few years ago and is used on the Small Dollars web site, and anywhere else anyone wants to use it.
Yeah CW, maybe we should have a babes coin series or did the Isle of Man already do that? Glad to see that you are experiencing american culture Aidan. Ed, nice coin and you know where I stand on that issue.
Yeah, I picked up both varieties of the concept dollar on eBay, non graded. They are beautiful piedforts.
Thanks!! I use this pic ALL of the time...I wish more people would look at the concept designs that made it to the finals. There are many at this site that would have made great dollar coins...but, I guess we live in a PC world where the mugs of SAC and SBA look better on dollar coins than what you see here. Actually, when I look at the SBA dollar, I can't help but think of Margaret Hamilton who starred in the Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch. "Want to play fire with me scarecrow?" See for yourself and maybe...just maybe...our government will do the right thing and bring liberty, freedom, grace, majasty and beauty BACK to our coins. http://home.earthlink.net/~smalldollars/dollar/page17.html
I would say Daisy Dukes "bust" would look quite nice on a coin http://sayanythingblog.com/2004/12/04/jessica-simpson-as-daisy-duke/ -Bobby
