I guess you can't trust what you read. The shipping status link on the Mint's web page shows they are still in Illinois, but the status on the USPS link shows that they're in my PO Box awaiting me! Sure enough...got a parcel notice in my PO Box this afternoon. Sounds like I'm going to have to leave work early tomorrow to get to the post office before they close.

What do the new nickel 5c. coins look like? Are they
the usual design with the 2005 date,or are they commemorative nickels?

Well, just to get the ball rolling, I've placed 40 of them in circulation here in Oklahoma City. They've probably already been snapped up by eagle-eye collectors. I'm waiting to see how long it takes for one to show up in my change.

When I tried to order nickels on 2/28 it took me forever to get through to the US Mint website. When I did finally reach the site, it read the product was "Not Available." This is on 2/28, five minutes past 12 noon EST. I tried again, and this time it took my order ok, but the site now read product is "Backordered until 3/3/05". Just to check, I went to the mint site to track my order on 3/1/05 and it read "Backordered to 3/15/05". I tracked the order the next day and it read backordered until 3/21/05". Yesterday which was March 9, I received an email that the mint had shipped my order of 2/28.

Now here is the real kicker. P.T. Barnum on ShoptAtHome had the very same nickel rolls from bags for sale at double the price of the collector purchasing them from the US Mint. $16.95 for one each P&D rolls. It looks like these people on the shopping networks received their orders ok, shutting out the small collector until a later date. I think it gives the ShopAtHome people and other networks a chance to rip collectors off. I hope no one purchased coins from these network shopping people, scared that the new nickels would be gone from the mint before their order was filled. I am going to write a letter to the Director's Office and ask about the shopping networks being ahead of everyone else. I know they are treated differently because they purchase in such huge quanities. It may not do any good to write the letter, but I am going to try.

I was looking over the article in todays CoinWorld about the coin exchange in DC. I noticed that the rolls pictured were not the nice Westward Journey wrapped rolls that come when ordered from the mint but blue standard bank wrappers. Was this true of all the rolls distributed that day? If I were there to get some rolls to stash away, I think I would have walked away a little dissapointed. As history shows the mint rolls with the mint name and MM on the wrapper always seem to bring a larger premium over the plain wrappers (due to searching I guess). This seems especially true with the 2004 Westward Journey rolls as viewed on ebay. On the other hand, a plain wrapper with Henrietta's signature might prove otherwise, thus marking the event. Was the event labeled on the wrappers? Just curious.

    Score !

My nickels arrived from the Mint today.

So far I have examined one D roll and one P roll, and my results are the same as others: the D coins are in much better shape than the P coins. Some of the Ps looked dirty.

I like the obverse design, I really like that "Liberty" is in Jefferson's handwriting, and I like the reverse. Similar to others, I would wish for more relief on both sides, particularly the obverse. And as much as I like the "fresh" approach to the obverse, I suspect that there is not enough detail to keep me interested for too many years.

I miss the '20s: SLQs, Walker halves, Indian nickels, St. Gaudens $20 gold. Not that I was around then, of course. :)

I went to a coin show in February and noticed some dealers had 50 roll cases of the new California quarters in Brinks box's. I thought that was the ticket in purchasing nickels, quarters, pennies etc. as I haven't had much luck at banks. Even if I had to pay a little premium it sure would beat the mints prices. Anyone had any luck purchasing these direct from these armored carrier's; Brinks, Wells Fargo etc. Everytime I see those trucks I think gold mine in coins. Thanks.

Somehow that just doesn't sound right... If I'm not mistaken, the armored car services don't own any of the product they transport. They do it for hire for various banks and businesses that use their services. If anyone were to be able to buy coins from them, I would think they could be purchased below face value (and in a back alley somewhere)

Maybe I'm wrong. If so, I'm sure someone will correct me.

As a matter of fact the armored car companies are the Mint's biggest customers. Even most of the larger banks buy their coins from them rather than directly from the mint because if they buy from the mint they have to pay an armored carrier to transport them all the way from Philly or Denver to their individual branches in Kokomo, IN, Whittier, AK, or wherever.

In answer to jblaine10's question - the armored carriers would be glad to sell coins directly to you. The question is, would you really want to subscribe to their services, and pay their not-so-small fees, for transporting a box or two?[IMG]

That pretty much answered my question. Thanks. These guys had tons of cases of Calif. quarters and were selling them at 13.50 roll.

From the first two rolls (D and P) of nickels, I put four in my collections, gave 23 to relatives, put 20 of each mint into a 40-nickel coin tube, and had 13 left over.

I took the 13 to work to pass out to some of the folks I work with, with interesting reactions.

Six people said “thanks” but barely looked at the coin beyond observing that it was different.

Three folks were enthusiastic and asked questions about the reasons for the new design.

Two folks already knew of the nickels, had been looking for the nickels, about jumped out of their chairs when I gave them a nickel, and both offered to pay me for it.

Amazing how much sunshine you can spread around for just a couple bucks. Is this a great hobby or what ?
