I thought the artist’s conception of Cleopatra would be an interesting one to use even though it’s a different Cleopatra than the one mentioned in the layout. This will definitely be my last coin of 2019. Maybe
Nice looking coin, @Deacon Ray , and a great addition to your Seleucid collection! This one came from the Henry Clay Lindgren collection, which he sold off in a series of buy-or-bid sales some 15 to 20 years ago. I like it because of the write-up about it in the Celator: Cleopatra Thea, Queen of Syria, with son Antiochus VIII. AR tetradrachm; 15.85 gm, 27 mm. Antioch mint, 125-121 BC. Obv: Jugate busts, right. Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ ΚΛΕΟΠΑΤΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ, Zeus Nikephoros seated l., holding lotus-tipped scepter; IE outer left, A under throne. Refs: SNG Spaer 2437; c.f. Sear 7135. Notes: Ex-Henry Clay Lindgren. Obverse die match to an example sold in Baldwin's, Dmitry Markov and M&M Numismatics New York Sale IX, January 13, 2005. Here's the write-up about the sale in The Celator:
She was an interesting character to say the least and married to 3 different kings. Cleopatra/Antiochos VIII Mint: Antioch 123 BC Obvs: No inscription. Antiochos radiate head right, within dotted border. Revs: BAΣΙΛΙΣΣHΣ KΛEoΠATPAΣ KAI BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY, Owl standing on prostrate amphora. That is a very nice coin @Deacon Ray with a great looking obverse. You are building a great collection of Seleucid bronze coins.
Hi All, Here's an AE portrait issue: Size: 21mm Weight: 9.2 g OBV: Jugate busts facing right: Cleopatra Thea, veiled, diademmed and wearing stephane, and Antiochus VIII, diademmed. Dotted border. Lol, that movie came out when I was in University... I was in a frat for a year or so. And, yeah, we were truly Animal House. It is why I left the fraternity... started ruining my college career, but some ridiculous fun for a while.
