I aquired a collection a short while ago, and have been going throught it. Found what appears to be a buffalo nickle made of copper. I have seen the coinfacts dot com article on the 1920 coin. I'm just not sure what this is.

weight is 73.3 grains, and diameter and thickness are same as standard buffalo.

    here are some pics:

Would really appreciate some info on this coin.

A standard Buffalo is 5 grams , don't know what that would = in grains , if copper probably made with a penny planchet 3.11 grams . yours most likely copper plated , wait for the error experts like Mike Diamond .

    73.3 grains equals 4.75 grams.

Looks like a nickel that has been stained a copperish color - not really unusual for that to happen.

It's probably just stained. I run into copper-colored nickels, dimes, and quarters all the time. Scrape the edge against a fine sharpening stone and you'll see the color of nickel.

Back in the day when I was a more active "detectorist", I recall finding nickels like that in the ground.....depends on the ground conditions as to what it will do to the coin....just a thought.

toyz4geo hit it right on the head. The coin was buried and soil conditions effected the surface. It's corrosion.

    Thanks,

It's obviously been in circulation. Any idea on the background? Ever ask the previous owner? History on this kind of coin would be interesting to catalog.

it looks like its been dug up - most nickels, dimes and quarters in my area turn black from finding them in the ground but i dont have the conscious to sell them ebay saying its a error like others do.

your Buffalo looks like it still has some dirt on it ?
