Kinda takes the fun out of collecting , heck if you were rich might as well hire someone to buy you a collection . JMO rzage
That being said that collection contains some of the most beautiful Franklins out there. It is akin to acquiring a fine work of art.
Hmmm. Stupid question time: So he says all are FBL except the 53-S and 62-P. I guess those are the holy grails then?
Wow!! I can think of at least 11,000 other coins I would rather spend my dough on than a collection of nice Franklins. I give the guy credit...it's a nice set for sure. But worth 11 grand...no way. Guy~
I thought they reworked the hub that dies are made from in '61 or early '62 , so it seems a lot of '62 & after Franklins would have FBLs rzage
Gotta agree with Rzage here. What fun is collecting if you just buy a whole registered set? I have a friend with TWO highly ranked Morgan sets. One is actually pedigreed. When we were still getting to know one another I showed him my Two Cent collection. All business strikes and all raw. He fell in love with them. Sooo.... he went out and bought a bunch of slabbed stuff rather quickly and had an instant registry set which he later sold. Hey, I sell coins too but his set would never satisfy me even if he DID (which he did) make money on it. There was very little love of the Type itself. clembo
Money corrupts like power corrupts? I often wonder if I had a million bucks to spend, would it change how I look at the hobby. I guess I'd settle for $250,000!
Good point Catbert and I'll be starting a thread on this shortly. Been talking to my wife about this actually. Look for the thread.
Actually - I'm putting together a set of 64flb's so my eyebrows definitely raised.. I read through the ad thinking 'what's missing here' and when I reached the "all are full bell except the 53s" part I went 'yup.. there ya go'. That's 10k of a 64 set right there. Lately all you see at shows are 65fbls.. nice, but I'm just not skilled enough to tell the difference between a 64 and a 65 except for the $200 or so in the selling price. I'll stick with my ever so common 64s I guess. And I agree - if you buy the whole set in one swoop the collecting fun is gone.
CoinGal, The same guy that has the Morgan sets is a Franklin freak as well. Find that 53-S with FBL. TONS O MONEY.
I thought this auction is the Franklins.. and yes, 53sFBL ... that's the big dog of any set. I've actually seen SEGS label some as '80% full bell' ... I had to laugh. MY set as a 53S in MS66. NOT full bell. But a very nice coin until I FIND a FBL and a buyer for my right kidney all in the same day. I'll likely have to win a lottery or cherry pick a BU roll some day to get my 53SFBL. Unless.. hey .. you got connections now .. get me one at the great Clembo discount from the shop, hmmm? (grin) Oh don't look so shocked, I know I can't be the first person to ask for a favor now that you're on the other side of the counter. Is it as bad as I anticipate? "Hey, Clembo... it's me.. your coinpal Bubba.. surely you can do better on this coin...old times sake?'
Bubba knows everything about shrimp but nothin bout coins Honestly don't believe I've ever seen a 53S FBL but haven't looked at shows. However, keep the right kidney warm IF I see one at the shop I'll let you know.
