My crystal ball predicts it will be met with apathy and sell poorly. It will be readily available in the secondary market at a discount to its issue price. That's not to say it won't be a nice collectible coin if you want one, it just won't hold it's value. I used to be a modern commemorative fan but they've lost me. Too many issues, high prices, and uninspired or silly subjects. All the same stuff that killed off the classic commemoratives
Yes but the low mintages can be so appealing. This years American Legion Unc silver dollar won't set a new record low, but 12,300 so far is in the bottom five. And if I can pick it up for less than issue price I'll be happy.
So true, and I almost mentioned it in my post. Who knows, 100 years from now these ignored issues may be rare and desirable and command a premium price - but I won't be around so no matter
The Christa McAuliffe coin is discussed here also: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/congress-votes-to-issue-a-christa-mcauliffe-commemorative.347222
Is the term "the left" or "leftist" considered political? If not, then would members be free to invoke the term "right wing" at their leisure? I ask because it seems to be selectively enforced (that term "political"). This seems to have been used as an excuse to punt a member while simultaneously allowing another safe passage. I'd like clarification please.
In your locked thread and the same thread where you banned another member for invoking politics, you allowed one "bully" who used the term "crazy leftist" or some such. He remains while the other does not. Please explain for the benefit of those who do not understand the special posting priveledges used here.
Another in a long line of junk coming from our mint system! There is more talent applied to produce a Hobo nickel that that coin will ever have!!!!!!!! Reed.
Plus it doesn’t much look like her, if you put that picture in a line up as her I wouldn’t pick her out! Hair is wrong, jaw line is wrong, eyes are wrong, space between the nose and mouth is wrong. Not what I would call a good job. Must have been a middle school art project that the mint accepted. I’m telling ya your average Hobo coin artist is WAY better than who the mint picked to do this coin. Reed.
The Mint hasn't picked ANYONE to do the coin yet. That is just someones "idea" of what the coin MIGHT look like. It is NOT a US Mint Artists rendition. No actual design has been picked for this coin yet.
Your right but I’m sure the final coin will be just as poor as any rendition of the coin we’ll see in the future weather it’s just a submission or the actual finished coin. I just have no confidence that the mint WONT put out junk. Here’s one of my most favorite junk coins. Looks like the mint opened up the submission process to first grade and below artists. And yes I think I could do better than that with a box of crayons and some white kraft paper. Reed.
junk in gold from the mint! The artist took a classic and destroyed it. It’s lop sided with a huge field on the left and no field on the right. And what’s with the crown rays. They look stupid. She is in a heck of a wind it seems with her hair streaming back. Maybe her face should also show the affects of the great wind she is in, kinda like a sky divers face Reed.
I really like the design. I carve hobo nickels and I might carve my version. She is a great American and I remember the day it happened. We were watching the launch live in high school.
@Brent hobonickel Welcome to CT. Brent I would love to see some of your hobo nickels please post some! Be sure to post them in a new tread and I’d put them in the coin chat forum. Look forward to it. Reed
I have nothing against her be honored in particular, though I think they should also honor the other 6 astronauts that were on the same mission. But I do like just about anything space related, so I'll probably get it. I don't care if it holds its value or not (read my signature lol). I'm hoping the official design is better than the proposed sketch, but I'm sure it will be. At any rate it should be more interesting than the basketball coins coming out next year.
