I’ll have to wait a while to get this one in hand because they don’t want to ship with all of the Christmas shipping going on but I won this one last Sunday in the recent Nomos auction. I might have overpaid but I have a feeling it will look even better in hand. I’m sure there are coins from Lucania in y’alls hands so pile on if you want to. LUCANIA. Herakleia. Circa 330/25-281 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.73 g, 2 h). Head of Athena to right, wearingpendant earring, a simple necklace and a Corinthian helmet adorned with Skylla hurling a stone; to right, Κ. Rev. EYΦ HPAKΛHIΩN Youthful Herakles standing facing, nude but for a strap across his chest and with the lion's skin over his right arm, holding a bow and arrow in his right hand and a club in his left; to left, above, Nike flying to left to crown Herakles; to right, Σ. HN III 1383. SNG ANS 68 (same dies). Van Kauren 80. Particularly artistic dies of fine style; well-struck, centered and clear. Good very fine.
Very nice! Yeah, probably your last for 2019, but given your acceptance & apparent "relaxed attitude" about late delivery, I suspect you won't be able to hold out another 13 days.
It finally arrived from Switzerland and it does look great in hand. The close up pics really don’t do it justice. In the distant shot you can see the lovely splint on my index finger. Had a new, razor sharp knife slip last Wednesday and cut right through the tendon at the top joint which was repaired this morning. Sorry for the tangent but figured it needed explaining.
Ouch! Sorry about your finger! That is a very choice example of the type. It looks even better in your photos. John
Well, at least you don't run with scissors (as far as we know ) That is one beautiful coin! But the question remains: Is it indeed the last of 2019???
It’s the last significant coin of 2019 but strictly speaking this was my last coin purchase of the year
A truly awesome coin, @H8_modern. Lovely toning and the detail in the lion-skin is simply superb! Since you asked: my comparatively rather humble example! Not quite as beautifully centred as yours and a bit worn. Not entirely happy with the photo, but still worth showing:
I think yours has great details on the lion, the club and his abs. Nothing wrong with that coin at all.
