Hi there, I work for a public park that collects many coins in our fountain. We clean and separate them from US currency, and now have a large amount of assorted foreign coins that we don't know what to do with. I'd say we have between 600 - 1000 of assorted coins of various currencies and age. Perhaps some valuable ones too! Is anyone interested? Or does anyone have suggestions on where we can donate them? If so, feel free to respond or DM! Ideally located in NYC, as we cannot pay postage on sending these anywhere. A list of currencies below. Also attaching a few photos! Nobody seems like appreciate world coinage. Just look for silver and get rid of the moderns. Aside from that, throw them back.
Seconding this answer. One idea would be to donate it to a local coin club. In my experience, coin clubs usually set up tables to give out free coins and information to children at coin shows and I'm sure they'd love to have a mix of foreign coins to let the kids dig through.
I think donating them to a group (scouts or numismatic group) would be best. Most of those coins are low value and wouldn't be worth your time even trying to auction them or sell them in a bulk lot.
I like donating to a local coin club or boy/girl scouts. If that doesn't tickle your fancy you could always donate to a local library! They may be used for a craft, prize/giveaway, or maybe even to start a coin club there!
We are a Stamp and Coin Collecting Club in Simi Valley. As per our mission statement, we educate and stimulate the hobby of collecting stamps and coins, not only to the youth, but our members also. If you have traveled to foreign countries and have unwanted or of no value to you, change or paper notes leftover from your travels, we appreciate you considering to donate for education, and collecting to preserve this hobby of great historic value. Likewise, we welcome stamps you may wish to donate to our club. We thank You very much for your willing generosity and help. We are looking forward to creating a Donor Recognition List to honor those who help our club growth and make it part of our club's history. We are grateful and thankful for your consideration and contacting us.
Our Club is interested. I do not know if I am posting well in this forum... If not I apologize. Someone, please, let me know. Thank You!
Check to see if any of the pre-Euro coinage is still redeemable for cash; I believe that Germany's old Deutschemark coins are still redeemable in full, as are the Irish coins.
The best way to get too much money for something like this is take it to a local small-time antique auctioneer and split them into as many lots as they will let you, but at least 100 pieces per lot, and don't tell anyone they came from a fountain. In fact, cleaning and sorting them probably cost you money. There are always unknowledgeable buyers at these sales who think any old or unusual coin is worth a fortune, and they will overbid.
