we have this coin and a dealer said he would give us £15 for this ($30) does this sound about right?

That coin doesn't look common at all. Assuming if it is genuine, I reckon it is worth a fair bit more. You might want to check this for historical price record: http://www.coinarchives.com/w/results.php?results=100&search=5+east+africa+1939

Mombasa (British East Africa), Rupee, 1888H (KM.5), good extremely fine, scarce in this condition

Estimate £ 70-90

Pity there is no picture with this one just to compare but the details sound the same.

 

Jessicarabbit, keep looking down the list, there is a batch of them. According to this one here, http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=344519&AucID=255&Lot=257, it was sold for 90 pounds. Well your coin isn't near that grade although it's difficult to tell what the trends are for this year so you can be hopeful.

The coin is listed in the World Coins catalog listed under Kenya. KM #5 mintage 94,000, Birmingham mint. The prices in my catalog are out date but VF list for $25 and XF $50.
