For whatever reason I had a nice 1863 IHC (~$15 value) in my pocket when I went to the gym. The coin fell out of my jeans when I took them off, so I put the coin back in that same pocket and tossed the pants in the locker. When putting the jeans back on after my shower, THE COIN, OF COURSE, DISAPPEARED. I think this is the dumbest loss possible.
You are right. I actually started to write about how I could top the OP's story, but I became embarrassed and decided to keep it to myself.
The best part is, it's a YMCA so now some 9 year old boy is going to pick it up and toss it in the change jar. If you're in the San Diego area, have fun coin roll hunting!
I left a rare Canadian Fenian Raid medal of 1866 in my pants pocket. Took my clothes to the laundromat and heard something thumping around in the dryer. Miraculously it only had a small scratch on Victoria's cheek. I felt stupid and lucky at the same time.
Wow! Nice Medal. Brings up a couple questions about it though. Do you still have it and do you know who it was issued to? I love medals like this and tracking down whom they may have been issued to.
I still have it 30+ years later, and an 1870 one with the original ribbon. I would have to pull them out to see who they were issued to and their units. I know they are both on the rolls. One of the most beautiful medals ever made with the wreath of maple leaves and pre-1965 flag.
Always nice to have them with their original ribbons. Some of the ribbons can be worth more and harder to track down than the medals themselves. Okay One more question. These are very rare medals so I gotta ask. What the heck was it doing in your pocket?
There's a septic tank on a property near me that has a $3,000 diamond in it. Why? Well, the lady of the house left her engagement ring in her pants when she put them in the laundry. Result ... ring with no diamond. She had a repairman tear apart the washer ... not there. Plumber checked trap in drain pipe ... not there. Septic clean-out companies just laughed when she asked if they could retrieve it. Cal
I've had a few times where I would have a coin and somehow the coin would be brought up in conversation and I would hand it to them for a closer look but it seems that I sometimes never get the coin back...
About 2+ years ago I was standing over a sink (light was better there for some reason) looking at an ancient coin (think it was one with a double victory reverse) and it fell from my fingers and went right down drain. I did not retrieve it then because i was sure it was in the bottom of the drain trap and I didn't plan to use that sink again until I had a chance to grab my tools and retrieve it. But later that day, I found myself using a very forceful water flow in that sink! A simple piece of tape across the sink would have been enough to remind me. But nooooooooo!!! I guess, to be honest, I should not call the coin 'lost' since I never got in that pipe to confirm whether it was still there. Days and weeks passed and I started obsessing about the icky crud that might be on the coin. I decided to just leave it in there, IF it were still in there. Two plus years later, now....can you imagine that poor coin?? Oyyyyy ewwwww! That's pretty dumb, I would say. LaC
I put a coin in a packaged envelope sitting on top of my car as I was pulling out my keys. Totally forgot the envelope was on my car. Drove away. I cannot believe I turned around 25 minutes later after I realized I didn't have it and I found it sitting there in the middle of the intersection of a Buffalo suburb.
Thanks for sharing. I've made lots worse mistakes. Steel yourself, put on a pair of rubber gloves, pretend you're an archaeologist, and go for it. Who knows what other treasures are in the trap. Cal
It was in a 2-1/2" flip and I had just got it. It made me and my wife to remember to check all pant and shirt pockets before doing laundry. Like I said, it was a combination of fear and grief. At least it wasn't the one with the original ribbon.
