PENNY ERROR?

    1988 D mint mark penny....on the back the building is silver and half the E&S is missing....is it worth anything?

    Shannon. In my opinion....no. The "ES" looks to be a die grease issue and the silver coloring you see on the memorial is just wear or the zinc underneath coming through a bit. worth a penny!!!

    I used to think the missing letters were a result of grease also, but someone, maybe @Fred Weinberg or @Pete Apple explained a weak strike issue. I don't know how to pull up that particular thread.

    The strike looks within standards as I can see, but I also see marks over that area that could be from a old coin counter. But as said worth a cent. IMO, Jim

    That's exposed zinc underneath the damaged copper plating. Not a mint error.
