A question often asked is, “How much is it worth?” There are many sources available that list values for coins. There are fewer sources that list values for paper currency. And even fewer that list values for related material such as tokens. It would be beneficial if there was a consolidated listing of all known sources for valuing all of these types of collectibles. OR has it already been done? I am suggesting that we, as a fairly knowledgeable group, put together a listing of resources that place values on material we collect. As a start, before we begin identifying specific resources, I think we would need to create a structure. For example: 1. United States A. Coins 1. Printed Sources 2. Online Sources B. Paper Currency 1. Printed Sources 2. Online Sources C. Exonumia 1. Printed Sources 2. Online Sources D. Other Categories 1. Printed Sources 2. Online Sources 2. Canada A. Coins . . . . . And so forth. Maybe by continent first, then by country. THOUGHTS?
I'm not sure I've seen such an inclusive list before. It would be a huge effort to put it together. For my personal interest, I would prioritize a list of *catalogs* in such an order, before a list of *valuation* sources. It's just my own focus possibly, but while I see things like eBay, HA, etc for valuation, I find it far more enjoyable to find a new catalog that I wasn't previously aware of.
Example (a familiar one): COUNTRY: United States Category: Coins Sub-category: Printed Sources Title: A Guide Book of United States Coins Author: R.S. Yeoman/Senior Editor: Kenneth Bressett Content: Coverage of the most commonly used coins prior to the creation of the U.S. Mint. Coverage of all U.S. coins and sets struck by the U.S. Mint for business, commemorative and collection purposes. Historical commentary of coins in the U.S. Coin specifications. Comments: Basic grading guidance. Values of coins in grades normally collected (values posted are considered to be only general guides).
My intent was to give collectors guidance on *valuation* of coins. This information is often associated with coin *catalogs*. But I consider a list of coin catalogs a separate area. For instance I know that Manley's book, Half Cent Die States is an important reference for identification purposes, but it is only incidental help for valuing US half cents.
