Do you collect coins: 1. for the joy of it 2. for the money or 3. Both Did you start collecting on your own? or did your parents or family member collect first?
1., hands down. But of course, the fact that coins are a better 'investment' than other hobbies does help justify it at times.
I collect coins for the joy or satisfaction I obtain from it. Right now it seems to cost money to do this!
I would say both. However I don't seem to sell any coins. I buy them. I collect them. I keep telling myself that when I upgrade my collection I'll sell the lower grade. But, I just keep them anyway! Bruce
For the joy of it first, next to sell a few to buy some more. Most of all for the thrill of the search. Have a happy and safe 4th. BILL
For the enjoyment I get from it. If I worried about making money from it, it wouldn't be quite as relaxing. Guy~
For me, I love the statement, "O if only coins could talk!" I wonder how many of those Barber coins were in saloon fights or stage coach robberies?
#1 of course, plus, except for my family, there's really nothing else that I enjoy spending my money on.
for the collecting part of it, though I do not mind owning silver and gold if something was ever to happen to drastically change our lives
lol Very well worded. I try to tell my wife that. That it's an 'investment', but she's heard the term thrown around too much in the 5 years I've known her. She knows I have no intention of selling anything. I like the history of it, the artwork of the designs and also the fact that you're using (essentially fake) money to buy real money from the past. I would like to pass the collection on to my kids someday. I don't know how expensive or how hard this stuff will be to obtain in the future, so if I can get things relatively cheap now, it's nice to have and hang on to this stuff. Just a really cool hobby. Wish I would have gotten back into it a few years ago. Nobody got me into it. Nobody in my family collects. Got into saltwater reef keeping and nobody in the family does that either so I guess I march to the beat of my own drum.
I enjoy it and find it relaxing. Besides, I figure if I am going to collect something, money sounds like a logical thing to collect.
The great thing about money is... its legal tender! lol If coin collecting all of a sudden disappeared, we'd still have money! Except maybe Jack, all his pennies might add up to a dollar or two
I started collecting about 4 years ago for my grandson. 1) To teach him a great hobby other than baseball. 2) He'll have something worthwhile when he inherits the collection. 3) He enjoys it & learns too. For me it's a pleasure and the thrill of the hunt.
I do it for the joy of it, something to keep me busy. I love the design of older coins, and the history behind them. Plus it's a hobby where you have something of value, that holds it's value or goes up, and is pretty liquid. If I need the money in the future, I'll sell, if not, my heirs got themselves a nice collection. I've gotten into other hobbies that stuff costs a ton, and once you buy it, the things are worthless.
