Libert DE veterans....off the top of your heads....if someone were to purchase an AU58 coin for either the Carson City or regular Type 1 or Type 2's....how far back (how old a coin) could you go and still pay UNDER $2,500 or so ?
Two years ago I helped a fellow start metal detecting. We got his equipment together and I taught him the basics. Two weeks later I got a phone call from him and he was whispering into the phone. I asked why and he told me he didn’t want anybody to hear what he was telling me. I asked where he was and he was out in a field and was alone so I repeated my question. He then told me he has peed his pants and I asked WHY he felt the need to tell me that and he said he was sending me pictures and hung up. I told my wife I was afraid I was about to get pictures of his urine soaked pants. But when I got the pictures I fully understood. He had just found his second target and dug up this. An 1876 $20 Double Eagle. Every time we talk my first and last comments to him are how much I hate him since I’ve never found a gold coin. He always just laughs.
Love these pictures could use advice on what books to buy to get into gold coins. Sorry for going off topic but since many experts are here thought I’d ask. Thank you
Not at all, happy to help.....the 2 MUST HAVES are A GUIDEBOOK TO DOUBLE EAGLE COINS by Bowers and A HANDBOOK OF 20TH CENTURY UNITED STATES GOLD COINS 1907-33 by Akers. The HANDBOOK only covers coins since 1907 so it's not as definitive on all the different types of gold coins pre-1907. But it has more info on the Saint-Gaudens coins I love, plus other post-1907 gold (i.e., Indian Heads).
When you go up to 66 on some of the commons, the price shoots up. 67's sees another 100-300% increase in price.
