I need to get off my duff and get this thing certified. The experts have told me it should go either 65 or 66 (mostly 65). Those who are familiar/work with NGC all believe that it would get a star (4 out of 4). Assuming it gets a 65* at NGC and a 65 at PCGS, which company should I send it to? In this case, "should" means "worth the most". BTW, the color on the observe is just about anything you want. Sometimes it looks pure red, sometimes all brown, but most of the time you get some version of the iridescent rainbow. It is not usually as bright as my pictures. They were taken to maximize it. Other comments and/or grade opinions welcome.
All the fine scratches on the coat and the rim trouble me somewhat. Don't think it would make 65, 64 maybe but not 65.
Nice coin, I'll say 64RB IF the color is original. Might be your pics, it does not radiate luster, but it DOES have that 17 strike. I am just now beginning to get comfortable grading the mint states, it is such a learning curve and will take a lifetime of continued practise to even get close. What I see keeping it from the 5 is the surface in front of Abe, and the coat. It is not obvious in all pics, only in some. They do not like hits on the lettering at all. Lighting is everything. I gave up on both pics and grading the toughies. I send them in now.
AJ, if you so not see the luster there, I don't know what to do. That coin has more luster than any other 2 coins I have put together.
I'd grade the coin 63 RB, but like some, the obverse rim scratches do worry me as far as slabbing is concerned. Regardless, that's a very pretty Lincoln & thanks for sharing...MIke
OK! I expected CT to be conservative. In hand, the 4 persons I consider to be experts have all graded it 65 and 4 others (at least knowledgeable) 2 for 65 and 2 for 66. Be-what -may, I also expected at least one person here to answer my question. Assuming it gets a 65* at NGC and a 65 at PCGS, which company should I send it to? In this case, "should" means "worth the most".
Send it to PCGS , grade MS-63 , way to many hairlines & scratches , unless the picture is magnifying them . rzage
IMHO, it'll come back atleast a MS-64, good chance at the MS-65. If it hits 65, I don't think it'll get the star, but if 64, then a good chance. I rememeber right, I read about the scratches and all on the coat can be overlooked most of the time when grading Lincoln's, as it had something to do with the relief of the die in that area that helped cause a lot of those scratches and nicks. I'm not sure if it applies here in this case, but that's what I remember reading. Phoenix
Hi all. Could the darkness in toning on all of the highest points on the obverse be from slight wear? Is it really MS?
For this coin, I would expect it to fetch more in the 65* plastic. That said, I do not believe that this coin has a realistic chance of getting a "*", much less a 65. More bluntly, I would be happy if NGC or PCGS even slabbed it. The rim damage is problematic, IMO. Respectfully...Mike
Look at the scratches on the obverse rim most prominent near 7 o'clock. I suspect the coin was forcefully rubbed up against something. Go get a Lincoln, drop it on a cement floor, and use your foot to drag it across the concrete -- you will get a very similar effect.
I have done it before and it makes the whole coin look that way. I don't think there is any problem (at least not big enough for it not to get slabbed).
First off, nice coin! Second, if you can get it into PCGS plastic, do it. You have a shot at 65, but you should expect a 64 from either, just because of the scratches. I think you will be okay for rims and color, but could get BB'd by PCGS for the scratches, imo. I have had slightly better luck with NGC for lincolns and BB's, fwiw.
