To me, it's a 64. Booming luster, decent strike, brought down from gem grade due to excessive contact marks.
66 Nice luster No rub only thing is a few marks in the field probably high in the grade but it's nice.
I'm not a big trade dollar guy. Although, I believe they grade them (without the chop marks of course), similarly to Morgan and Peace $s? Which I am familiar with. So I'm at 64? Although, I feel it could be a 65, that PCGS unnecessarily/harshly graded down a step b/c of that scratch on the Obverse? Nice looking coin nonetheless.
The Philadelphia Mint made Proof Trade Dollars, including some Proof only dates, but none were made at the San Francisco Mint.
64 the chatter and very slightly worn spots on the obverse kept it from a 65. I'm very new to grading and see many coins that should be graded lower and many higher, it's only an opinion so it is likely a 66? Lol
I went with 66, as these are rarely struck this clearly and the luster is impressive. Trade dollars are awfully tough though & most of my experience is with chop marked examples.
After I read this I googled it. They didn't make very many of them, and a lot of them ended up in circulation, though, which is why I had never seen any. There were only 700 made in 1875.
I do collect them but mine pale in comparison. Excellent strike and stunning luster but then there's all that obverse chatter. Still, I'd say a solid MS-64 with a CAC for good measure.
