The United States Mint pulled the trigger this afternoon in announcing a sale date of July 15 for fractional American Buffalo gold coins, and then just as quickly snuffed the message.

Currently, the U.S. Mint offers only proof one ounce American Buffalo gold coins. The Mint sent out a message through its press release RSS feed indicating American Buffalo gold coins in proof and uncirculated versions would be sold July 15 at noon (ET) in the following sizes:

    one ounce,
    one-half ounce,
    one-quarter ounce.
    one-tenth ounce, and
a four-coin set which contains one coin in each size.
Essentially, the Buffalo gold coins will be sold similar to American Eagle Gold coins.

However, as already stated, although the announcement was already sent, the Mint quickly pulled it. For whatever reason — maybe pricing needed to be adjusted, the release time had to be changed, marketing jumped the gun, there was a technical glitch, etc., etc. — only the Mint knows.

Just got a message two days ago from the mint because I was on the Buffalo gold subscribers program. They were letting me know that in three weeks they were getting ready to send out the new 1oz proof for a relatively small price of $1200!!!!!! WOW!!!! Last year this time it was $650. I remember that price because I was on vacation when I ordered it and I remember stashing away that money from my vacation money so I could pay for it when I returned. A lot happens in a year.

Needless to say, I canceled my subscription and will try to find other ways to afford these sets when they come out. I do have some coins that I would like to sell, but I want to wait before I jump the gun and the mint decides not to release the Buffaloes. Great thread to keep those interested up to date with info.

I'll buy a tenth ounce when they come out, just to have an example of one of the most beautiful coin designs ever made in gold. But that'll be all, maybe a quarter oz if they aren't too pricey

Jaceravone: Mint sold the 2006 1-oz Buffalo for $800, and 2007 for $826.

Alhas - I stand corrected. You are correct. I went back on my order summary on the US mint web site and found my orders. I don't know what I was thinking, but I've had myself convinced this whole time that I paid $600 in 06, and $650 in 07. Maybe I was just trying to make myself feel better.

Those prices look like bargains, don't they?
I thought I had been reckless in paying $800 for the 2006 Buffalo, but it's melt value is over $900 today.

Perhaps the Buffalo stampeded and they have to round them up before they can sell them.

I purchased a 2007 buffalo proof for $850.00, quite a low mintage compared to the 2006. It's hard to beat the appearance of the one ounce coin, i think the fractionals will be a little less striking because of the small size. The buffalo nickel has a diameter of 21.2 mm, and a 1/4 ounce gold eagle is 22 mm. The tenth ounce gold eagle is only 16.5 mm, that compares to a Roosevelt dime with a 17.9 diameter. Franklin half dollar(30.6 mm), One once gold eagle(32.7 mm). Morgan/Peace dollar(38.1 mm), Washington quarter(24.3 mm), Half ounce gold eagle(27 mm).

the quarter oz will be about the size of a nickel. That will be an aesthetic knockout IMHO. I'm thinking set of unc 1/4th oz's built from the mint from day one.

will the mint be selling the unc's or dealers?

From what i have read the mint will not be striking fractional bullion buffalo coins(these are the coins without the W mintmark that are offered to dealers). So, i assume the uncirculated can be purchased from the mint as are the Gold Spouse coins. Yes i think all the fractionals will look very nice, the 1/4 ounce might get dubbed the Gold buffalo nickel.

It would have had to be below $2,500.

    One oz = 950,
    1/2 oz = 475
    1/4 oz = 250
1/10 oz = 95 If these prices are close, I would imagine you could get this set for about $1,770 Plus the cost of a case $230 or $2,000 for the set. And I would think this would be high retail for an MS 69 set.
