Type 1 and 2 1886 Indian Head Cents

I agree, that it's the simplest way to identify the coin, is by the shift. But some that want a little extra, to find out a little more, they need to count the milled inner rim teeth, to make the discernment between type 1, and type 2. On the type 1's there is 125 teeth, on the type 2 there is 136 teeth. I don't know if any of the coin guides indicate this.. This i found accidentally while doing the rendering of the coin, for the relief...I'm currently trying to make Large Scale type one... See the sneak peek examples below... These coins take well over 125 hours of sculpt time to make. No CNC, just pure blood n guts sculpting... Alot of observing!

In type 1 the last feather is between the letter C and I. In the type 2 the last feather is between the letter I and A.

The ninth feather on the Type 1 points between the I and C . The ninth feather on the Type 2 points between the C and A

 

The difference between type 1 and 2 is simple. Type two has the lowest headress feather between the C and the A. Type one has it between the I and C.
