Greetings: I'm trying to do some research on a particular Bar Kokhba middle bronze coin.

This coin has: obv Palm branch within a wreath - rev Lyre.

It is labeled "Irregular Issue" by NGC Ancients. My research is showing these coins were in the 9-12gram weight.

This coin weighs in at 5.15grams. Does anyone know why this particular coin is so light weigh?

I appreciate any input. Most "thanks", in advance.

I do not. I'm just asking for some input regarding the weight difference. Is this what NGC considers an "irregular issue"? And, has anyone come across this before. Thanks.

There's an entire section on "Irregular Issues" in Mildenberg's Coinage of the Bar Kochba War, his coins 161-233. These are coins of unusual style and irregular weight that don't conform to the standard issues. I don't recall your coin exactly, but it most likely was a die match to one plated in Mildenberg. if you could provide images or the cert.# I can help you.

    Fred,

I was expecting a different type of coin. That coin shouldn't say that. In our database irregular issue and undated are next to each other. Either I or someone else grabbed the wrong drop down, and I didn't catch it when it went out. Feel free to send that back in as a Mech Error and we can fix it at no charge to you. I apologize for that.

Address it to my attention and I'll make sure it goes out the day after it arrives.

    Barry
