I received these two coins in change recently, they both had little wear and retained mint luster but no dates and missing elements. On closer examination there appeared to me to have been zealous die filing. The file marks are convex lines on the coin. What is your opinion on what caused this? Could the clerk have just popped open an old role of pennies for change? Perhaps there are more like these two in circulation.
Greasers. Nice specimens to retain. Grease really flattens the devices as seen on the reverses but as paddy suggests, there could be some filling going on for the obverses. I guess it may depend on the amount of grease present at the time of the strike, but to virtually obliterate a date, filling might be a more plausible explanation. A little outside my realm of understanding to confirm...just a hypothesis. Full rims though.
