Anybody else see corrosion like this? Two mint sets from different years with similar corrosion. These were stored with 63 other sets that had no issues. It's a shame.
might look like spilled paint but under magnification you can see it is a corrosion on the surface of the coin in a sealed sets. Makes milk spots look good.
At this point I could see no harm in at least trying acetone on the coins. If this stuff is organic it should dissolve. Did this happen to other coins in the set or just these?
It looks like it's on the coins and not the packaging but this gives a new definition to the term milk spots.
Just these two coins, broke the 63 out to see the reverse better. Will try acetone later in the week. 63 would have been a nice coin if not for the damage.
It would be interesting to find out how these sets were assembled back in their day. How much was done by hand and what part was automated. It would seem these, once they were sealed, were inserted into the envelope by hand. To assume this was passed on after this happened would seem strange. Unless whatever this is was not always white and maybe was clear and then changed over time? Just throwing up some ideas.
I agree, going to look at it tomorrow under a microscope. really seems organic but what would cause it especially on two sets from different years. That's why I am also surprised that others have not seen this before.
That's a mega-milk spot. The green dot in the middle is quite interesting and most likely the cause of the milk spot. I don't believe you will be able to ratify that kind of damage. Even if you remove the spot the coin will show the damage it has already caused to the surface.
Well besides the FBI, this is probably the best place to get your answer. Now if that coin was involved in a crime or part of a crime scene, the FBI would solve it. As you can see on both coins, it's not contained to one spot. It almost looks like splatter.
I would give it a soak in olive oil just to stop the oxidization. Can't really hurt it any. I think it's value is now just silver content.
