Over the years my wife often told me how sexy is my superb aquiline nose. (See my avatar portrait). The prominent bridge of my nasal appendage makes me look like an eagle (aquilinus in latin). But did you know that Plutarch, the greek biographer, wrote that the nose of Mark Antony was a characteristic and a mark of beauty and nobility:

In ancient Rome it was considered a sign of leadership to be born with a crooked nose. It is even called a « Roman nose » in the world of plastic surgery! Why was it a symbol of virility? In these times, the handsomeness standard for a man was to be an hero, a fighter or a « macho » man. And the crooked nose, like some boxers have, is an attribute of sexy masculinity. The huge statue THE COLOSSUS OF CONSTANTINE that once occupied the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius is a very good example of the legendary « Roman nose ».

Now here are my top 3 emperors with a crooked nose :

    1) Nerva

    2) Philip I

    3) Theodosius

Now this is time for the Challenge: show us your best crooked nose examples ! Who nose how many we can find?

You know I can’t let a thread about noses pass by without showing my Nerva.

This thread reminds me of the movie Rocky where he spends most of the movie talking about how proud he is that his nose has never been broken until...

Well, Nerva "the Nose" obviousy needs to be mentioned first:
    Rom – Nerva denarius, Aequitas.png
Nerva, Roman Empire, denarius, 98 AD, Rome mint. Obv: IMP NERVA CAES AVG GERM PM TR P II, laureate head of Nerva right. Rev: IMP II COS IIII PP, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. 18mm, 2.98g. Ref: RIC II Nerva 44.

Victorinus had quite a prominent beak, too:
    Rom – Victorinus, Antoninian, Salus.png
Victorinus, Gallic Roman Empire, AE antoninian, 271 AD, Trier mint. Obv: IMP C VICTORINVS PF AVG; radiate, draped, cuirassed bust of Victorinus r. Rev: [VIRT]VS AVG; Virtus, helmetes, standing r., holding spear and leaning on shield. 17mm, 1.98g. Ref: Mairat 635; RIC V,2 Victorinus 78.

This Constantine made its way into my collection exclusively because of the nose:
Rom – Konstantin der Große, AE3, Soli invicto comiti, Rom, Beizeichen (neu).png
Constantine I, Roman Empire, AE3, 313 AD, Rome mint. Obv: IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; bust of Constantine I, laureate, draped, cuirassed, r, Rev: SOLI INVICTO COMITI; Sol, radiate, chlamys draped across r. shoulder, standing l., raising r. hand and holding globe in l. hand. 19.5mm, 3.41g. Ref: RIC VII Rome 2.

And a very well-deserved honorable mention goes out to this anonymous medieval monk:
    MA – Herzogtum Bayern-München, Mönchspfennig.png

Duchy of Bavaria-Munich, Ernest I and William III, AR pfennig, 1402–1435 AD, Munich mint. Obv: head of monk wearing hood l. Rev: EW in circle. 15mm, 0.46g. Ref: Beierlein 160–165.

Titus: It must have been an attractive look to the Romans back then, that's probably where the term "Roman nose" came from.:troll:

Rameses II fought the Hittites (another great Empire) at the Battle of Kadesh... Rameses told everyone HE won, as the Hittites stated THEY won. Lotta dumb mistakes from Rameses II side, but I understand it was really a draw.

You might know them as these guys...
