Absolutely fantastic coins AJ, I would love any off them in my collection, although way outside my budget. I think if I had to pick a favorite it would be the two Sicily the TET and Drachme are close to perfect. Congrats.
This list is seriously just nuts. They are all of them dream coins in my book (no, I’m not actually writing a book, but if I was, I’d want include every coin on this list). These are not merely pricey and pretty to look at, but IMHO a sample of some real treasures available in our hobby to a true connoisseur... with the patience, resources and good fortune to acquire them. I hope you have an equally satisfying 2020!
We're watching a connoisseur at work! Clearly your coins reflect research, understanding, and planning, leaving you able to recognize and act on opportunities as they arise. You've managed to acquire some stellar Greeks in the face of difficult competition! Congratulations on the fine year . The Syracuse tet and Pergamon stater are indisputably beautiful and of the finest style. The Nektanebo stater... well, that's a dream coin for me . The ex Gonzaga-- one of the most coveted pedigrees! That Carausius is incredible and being able to trace it to the ground is extra special. Every one of those coins make me smile. What a great hobby!
What an amazing coins! I like Them all, but the Syracuse Tetradrachm is the most outstanding, the detail on it is so wonderful.
There is nothing really left to say - mind blowing! Thank you so much for sharing these works of art with us! There is one quote that maybe the rest of us can at least relate to in our own modest way - in our own collections.... this sentiment really unites all of us collectors in some way: "I wanted to ensure I at least had an example of the type" ..
Divine coins Ancientjoe. Thanks for sharing these with a mere mortal like me. Just kidding, but beautiful additions, indeed. As i am into Romans more than Greek, i chose no. 10 because of the provenance.
We have several members here who post coins well above my price bracket but we can count on AJ selections to combine grade, interest, beauty, history and all other factors into the ability to select coins that actually are worth the price. We hear about getting 'bang for the buck' but usually this refers to finding 'bargains' rather than high end coins. AJ's coins are regularly exceptional in so many different ways but always seem so very much more than just high dollar.
It's an understatement to say that's a stunning list. If forced to choose a favourite I'd pick #3, such an amazing piece.
I should have used the term, "Mindblowing" to describe AJ's top ten instead of the Triton XXIII catalogue material. John
Joe, An amazing set of coins, good work finding all those, and thanks for sharing your collection with us. I have always liked the reverse of the Katane drachm. The portrait of the young river god surrounded by various water creatures has always seemed just right. The obverse is very well engraved too. The placement of the chariot wheel seems geometrically impossible unless the engraver was trying to show that the chariot was turning at that moment. I think Nike is crowning the charioteer as they cross the finish line and win the race, but I can't remember if a chariot race ends at one of the turning posts or in the middle of the straight? Either way, it is an awesome obverse die. John
