Stopped by a small coin show today. There wasn't much there that was in my son's and my price range, but we did find this little lady in a bin for $10. I feel like it was a decent price. What say you? How would you grade it? Does anyone collect half dimes? I feel like it is one of those weird denominations that don't get much love. If you are a half dime lover/or just have one for your type set, let's see them!
I love early half dimes. I have a complete “Red Book” set minus the nearly impossible 1802. I can’t post an photos until next week. As for the others, I have all of the type coins. I don’t want to discourage you, but the piece you purchased has EF sharpness, but has environmental damage (very dark toning that has worked its way into the surfaces) and scratch in the obverse field. It’s an okay buy for $10, but you will probably want to upgrade it some day.
I knew she wasn’t perfect but she fits in with the other well circulated/loved coins in the type set. I will never be able to get real nice examples, so I am totally ok with details coins or lower grade.
I think it's a nice hole filled. I guess it depends on the level of condition you're looking for. If they all look consistent, that's a good thing. I agree with @johnmilton on condition. So it's the first half dime for your 7070 or an upgrade? Here are my 7070's.
Nice! That was a good price for an extra-fine. A quick dip in acetone should lighten it and bring out the detail better for such a small coin. Soak and air dry- do not rub. Most of all, I like the fact that your son was involved.
Nice coin and price. I'd definitely try an acetone bath to see if it lightens it any. This reminds me that I forgot to put a Dansco 7070 on my Christmas Wish List
Probably not, due to how much they cost and how hard they are to find. I did, however, put the wild man coin management software on my list and told my wife to please make sure I get it. That'll keep me busy all year
They are cool little coins, and a lot of dates can be purchased quite reasonably. I went through a time years ago when I was quite infatuated with the seated series. I still have maybe a dozen half dimes, around 50 seated dimes, and some other denominations. Thought maybe I'd just focus there and make it a lifetime deal, but I found too much other stuff that's begging to be acquired (yeah I know that's not real smart!). Still have a soft spot for them though.
