It's Half Dollar Weekend! I'll be posting 4 different series of halves today, for your grading pleasure. Grades will be revealed Monday evening. How good is CoinTalk compared to the TPGs? Let's find out! Over the next several months, I'll be posting a continuous stream of Guess the Grade threads. I will be using photos from the Heritage auction archives (please do not cheat!). All you have to do is guess the grade! I will be attaching a poll to each thread. Please select the grade that you think best represents the coin (to avoid bias, please select your grade before viewing the rest of the thread). Also please post your opinions about the coin, and it would be most educational if you could explain why you chose the grade you did. Around Christmas, I will tally up the results and see how we did. This thread is an offshoot of a recent thread where I compared CT grading to the TPG, seen here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-good-is-cointalk-at-grading.343417/ We're going to cover a wide range of material, and some of it may be out of your wheelhouse. However, if you are a confident grader, you should be able to accurately grade almost any coin. (the anomaly you see on the rim near her head is a flaw in the gasket, not a rim nick)
Old holder pcgs. I’m at 64 on this one but today I could see it as 65. A stunning coin and a great die crack I love it
Clean fields, what seems to be a solid strike. Luster subdued by the toning which screams originality. I went 65.
I voted 58. Old holder and high point rub. I had a hard time making up my mind with this one. Edit: Going off the second pics, I'm probably wrong.
Solid 65. Great strike, luster, surfaces. A few ticks in the reverse field, but only some tiny, non-distracting marks in the main focal areas.
Every coin I see is AU58. I think I voted like AU58 in the last 5 of these GTG. It has become my go-to grade. It's all I see anymore. You ever seen the movie with Jim Carey named "The Number 23" - Trailer? Well, that's me, but the number is see is everywhere is "58". Hey, maybe they really are all AU58's and I'm not losing my mind and it's not some TPG conspiracy.
